For some of you poker will be the work, while for others, it’s a chance to indulge your hobby in a perfect setting – and if you’re lucky enough, skillful enough, or just plain happy enough to make your way to Austria for the July Festival, it’s not all about the big-money in the €700,000 Main Event.
You won’t find many casinos with a history as rich as The Casino Velden, opening way back in 1950 and consistently updating itself in the years since. Apart from open-air gaming which they introduced in 1974, ten years ago saw the new version of the casino extended towards the lake.
Boasting 40 tables, there will be cash games running from 3pm until 5am every day, with PLO and 7-Card Stud on offer as well as the No Limit tables.
Casino Velden’s poker manager Gerald Golker has promised “an exclusive ambience, a professional team and a poker extravaganza” set amid “a breathtaking backdrop on the banks of Lake Wörther.”
When it comes to relaxing, Velden seems to have it all covered. The three main hotels each have their own distinctive approach to luxury.
The Casino Hotel Velden itself is a 4-star modern affair an authentic Viennese coffee house, a private beach at the beautiful lake Wörthersee, and the gourmet restaurant "Caramé".
The Hotel Carinthia, also 4 star, is smack-bang in the centre of town, close to the casino and commands superb views of the Westbucht bay and Lake Wörthersee itself. They offer rooms, suites and apartments in various sizes, and throw in a generous breakfast buffet to start the day.
The favourite is the Schlosshotel Velden, offering up 5 star luxury in an actual palace! A rich history and magnificent stately rooms combine with excellent cuisine, a new SPA world, and perfect service. It doesn't get any better than this!
Vacations are not only for hiding in casinos and hotels of course, and Velden offers plenty of dining and drinking opportunities. The Switch Bar is a popular after-hours choice, as is the GIG bar club, and the Casino Velden’s own American bar "Schinakl" is hugely popular as well. The Monte Carlo of the Alps also has “a reputation as a society and party area”, so you won’t be short of choices!
During the day, Velden am Wörthersee to give it its full title, is a delightful vacation spot in the heart of Corinthia, and with the fresh air and magnificent landscape surrounding you, a boat ride on the lake, a hike in the mountains or a casual round of golf are all in the neighbourhood.
